The Competition I Almost Quit 📖✨

Two days before a regional science competition, Andrés wanted to withdraw. His team's prototype had failed repeatedly, and the group had started arguing about what to change. Andrés felt responsible because he had designed one of the main components. He had already decided to tell his teacher that he was quitting when she asked him to stay after class. Instead of giving him a solution, she reminded him that the purpose of the competition was not only to win but also to learn how to solve problems under pressure. Andrés stayed. The team simplified the design, worked late the next afternoon and finally produced a version that worked. They did not win first place, but they received special recognition for teamwork. Looking back, Andrés says the most important part of the experience was not the award. It was realizing that frustration had almost made him leave before the real learning began.

2.27 · Reading Challenge 2

The Story We Tell About Failure 📖

Two people can experience the same setback and tell completely different stories about it. One person may describe a failed exam as proof that they are “bad at the subject.” Another may see the same result as evidence that their study method needs to change. The event itself matters, but the meaning we give it can influence what happens next. This does not mean we should pretend every failure is positive. Some experiences are painful, unfair or genuinely disappointing. However, reflection can help us separate an event from our identity. Failing at something is not necessarily the same as being a failure. The story we tell ourselves can either close a door or help us decide what to try next.

What is the central idea?

What contrast does the text present?

The author says people should pretend painful experiences are positive.

What does “separate an event from our identity” mean?

Which idea would the author most likely support?
